Skoda Octavia 4x4 2004
VALUE
Easily more cost effective than an Audi or VW, better than any Japanese vehicle.
COSTS
Reasonable. NZ$65 or so a week for about 600km of nasty Auckland driving.
DRIVING
Excellent handling due to ESP and 4x4 (no need to brake on bends!) Really good fun. Incredible oversteer that can catch you off guard if you are used to solely front wheel drive when pushing through a harsh corner at speed. Only becomes an issue when hitting 65km and below corners at double recommended speed. Get's a little lose, then kicks into line.
PERFORMANCE
The 20v 1.8T has ample power. The turbo is not noticable, and power seems well distributed based on driving conditions.

Scooby Owners - eat your hats! And see my dust.
COMFORT
Firm and good amount of room. A reduction in boot and more back passenger space would be a big improvement.
NEGATIVES
Between 105km and 115km per hour, distinct drive shaft whine and rear diff noise.
Window washers in front poor and spray way to high - not adjustable.
Needs lower springs - 15mm all round. This would sort out the oversteer experiences.
OVERALL
8/10 - if I owned rather than leased, I would drop it by 15mm and harden it up, and definatly chip it.
