| Novella | |
Hmmm... its been a long time, but I have finally started writing again. Just a little each day, but trying to keep it regular.
Will I publish it? Probably not, it's a Novella (target 50,000 words) and they are pretty hard to publish.
However, I have considered publishing it via the Internet. A simple PDF is probably best, and if someone decided to "steal" the work, then I guess thats life.
The question I ask myself, if I was to make it a "download" book, would people actually pay for it, and what would they be willing to pay? US$1? US$4.95? US$9.95?
Oh well, I will give it more thought, but I am sure there is bound to be some opinion on this out there somewhere?

| On Writing: Synopsis or Outline | |
If you have sniffed around (no - not there - get away!), you will notice that I dabble in writing, among other creative outlets. Yes, I know, a blog *IS* writing. But I mean fiction, like short stories, novels and so on.
My latest creative writing assignment (yup, I am doing a correspondence course) is on writing a plot outline for a novel.
However, I am confused. It is described as an outline, and as a synopsis. From my own research, it seems more likely these are two different things.
Anyway, if you know the real definition of what they are, let me know.
Otherwise, stay tuned, because my outline for my first novel should be up under the writing section before the end of the weekend.
I for one would love your opinions on it.
I was warned not to put stuff like that up, in case someone steals it. But shit, who cares? I will have proof I did it first, and if they finish a novel first, AND get it published first, fine! That's the nature of business. I will just track them down and push their face into a dirty nappy - I have many of those floating around here.

| A short writing assignment | |
Another short piece - very self indulgent of me
"The Girl"
I am half way through my creative writing course, and it has taken me over a year. Life does not seem to allow for me to fit everything in. Target for completion - End Of August.
Let's hope they will let me finish - they prefer to have it completed within a year!

| A 'Rort' | |
Argh - what is it with people?
Every second article in the newspaper has the word Rort used in it somewhere? Are journos so dull they have to use words 90% of the populous don't understand.
Now, my language skills are not the best, I had no idea as to what the word meant. So being the industrious individual that I am, I decided to find out.
What is Rort? Check for definitions on Dictionary.Com and it comes up with unknown word! Try some other locations and you get undefined.
So - after a lot of hunting (gotta love the web!) I found it. Well - I think I did.
rort
Pronunciation: (rôrt)
—n. Australian.
a rowdy, usually drunken party.
Now, that does not sound quite right in the context of what the journos have been using it in, so I dug deeper.
rort
v. Australian.
to take unfair advantage of a public service for your own benefit
Much better I say, but really - are journos so insecure they have to start using words that people don't understand? I asked several, people - and until they looked up in a Oxford Dictionary with Australian Slang they had seen it but did not know what it was - except in the context of what it was used in.
So, my friendly Journos at New Zealand's largest newspaper - why have you started using Australian slang for very New Zealand articles?
And why has it taken over recent articles like a virus?
Do you get paid by the number of times you use new, somewhat unfamiliar words?
Probably. |
